An acquaintance of ASL values can facilitate the juxtaposition of various film or television works of a period, region, genre, company, or particular filmmaker. When analyzing a particular movie, it is, therefore, much more helpful to observe the ASL’s variations during its course (for example, the ASL of individual scenes, sequences, blocks, or acts). On the other hand, by the force of ASL values or shot counts, we can gain a lot of various and inspiring suggestions for stylistic research in the case of groups of films. For what kinds of research may ASL be used? In the case of a particular film, the very ASL value will help us get a rudimentary awareness of its editing pattern, but it will not tell much more. Those values are meant to be used as tools for further analysis.

It is necessary to point out that very ASL values are not the final results of any research. Since I am updating the database regularly, it will continue growing more prominent. Thirdly, it consists of many entirely rare silent films from the 1910s all around the world. Secondly, it covers a large number of films from Eastern European countries. Firstly, it includes an almost total number of preserved films of Czech silent cinema and at least 33 % of Czech sound cinema production from each year till (so far) 1933. Besides the fact that you can find hundreds of ASL measurings of movies from the last decades here, the database is unique for at least three other reasons. In my database, it is possible to find more than 3500 measurings of more or less contemporary films and television episodes from many countries.

ASL, a concept created by Barry Salt), I measure the film’s length in seconds (24fps in the case of sound films) and then divide it by the number of counted shots. I achieved those measurements by counting film shots by hand-clicker, processing the number of shots in particular software, or making a shot-by-shot analysis. The database FILM-SHOT-COUNTER assembles and offers results of my own „cinemetric“ measurements of films and television episodes.

It does so through a cultural legal study of Joss Whedon’s multi-media series Firefly/Serenity. This paper attempts to begin the task of thinking justice in an age of quasi-hieroglyphics.

If legal theory has only recently become aware of the pain and problems of law’s textual medium what is to be made of a culture where information exchange through reading and writing becomes displaced by the visual and physical acts of icon manipulation? How is justice to be achieved in a coming post-literate age of quasi-hieroglyphics that is the emerging media of graphic user interfaces on touchscreens? In a ‘software-sorted society’ (Murakami Wood and Graham 2006) can there be something external to the code that can be justice? Further, can this justice be more than just a refugee of earlier legalities, but be a true measure of the emerging techno-totality? Notwithstanding the remaining challenges of poverty, violence, gender and rights bequeathed by the past to contemporary legal thought, it is at this nexus of medium, justice and power being birthed by the leap to digitality that ‘the future’ confronts legal thinking. INDEX WORDS: Public relations, Television, Media, Multimedia, Audience, Fandom, AMC, CBS This study shows that the relationship between entertainment publicists and media is dynamic, intertwined, complex, and historically hidden. Each of these shows speaks to fandom in particular ways and are representative of the industry’s current approaches in luring specific audiences to TV.

From a media industries, fan studies, and emerging socio-cultural public relations perspective, this project pulls back the Hollywood curtain to explore two questions: 1) How do TV public relations practitioners and key tastemaker/gatekeeper media define, create, build, and maintain fandom? and 2) How do they make meaning of fandom and their agency/role in fan creation from their position of industrial producers, cultural intermediaries, members of the audience, and as fans themselves? This project brings five influential, working public relations and media professionals into a conversation about two case studies from the 2010-2011 television season - broadcast network CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and basic cable network AMC’s The Walking Dead. This is a copy of my MA thesis, completed in 2012 at Georgia State University.
